Strelley Community School

High school students standing up for their community

After hearing in the news that the government had announced plans to close up to 150 remote communities in Western Australian the Warralong community was understandably worried.

Cameron, our High School teacher, saw an opportunity to teach his students about advocacy and to make the voice of young people in Warralong heard. Cameron assisted his students to each write a letter to WA Premier Colin Barnett and Prime Minister Tony Abbott. The students letters expressed their thoughts and feelings about the prospect of having their community closed.

Anthalia’s letter (below) was shared on social media and went viral with over 400 likes and over 100 shares.

The Warralong community very much appreciates the support of the broader community in the fight to stop the forced closure of Aboriginal communities.

Congratulations to Anthalia and other High School students for writing excellent letters that clearly demonstrated their passion for Warralong.
